Similarity of Breathing Oscillations in Magnetron Discharges

Fraunhofer USA will be represented at ICOPS 2021 by our scientist Bocong Zheng on the similarity of breathing oscillations in magnetron discharges. The topic will explore how scale-invariant breathing oscillations are observed in similar magnetron discharges via fully kinetic particle-in-cell/Monte Carlo collision simulations. The similarity law (SL) is verified over a scale from magnetron discharges to microdischarges. Breathing oscillations are suppressed at higher pressure p and enhanced at stronger magnetic fields B. The results of this study contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the operation of magnetron discharges.

Comparison of Magnetron Sputtering Discharge Characteristics Operating in DC and RF Modes: A PIC/MCC Simulation Study

Fraunhofer USA will be represented at AVS 67 by our scientist Bocong Zheng on the similarity of breathing oscillations in magnetron discharges. The topic will explore how the discharge characteristics in radio-frequency magnetron sputtering (RFMS) and direct current magnetron sputtering (DCMS) discharges is studied via fully kinetic 2d3v particle-in-cell/Monte Carlo collision (PIC/MCC) electrostatic simulations. Two simulations of DC and RF magnetron discharges under the same input power are performed, the interplay between the fundamental plasma parameters is analyzed through their spatiotemporal dynamics. This yields a comprehensive understanding of the operation of magnetron discharges. The results are beneficial for the scaling, design, and optimization of magnetron sputtering under various power sources in practical applications.
